Can you use a piece of paper to learn Salat?

Question:

Is it true that you are not allowed to read salah off a paper? I am learning namaz and don’t remember all the motions and surah’s yet, so I was thinking of trying to read with a copy of instructions by me for the time being. However after checking some sites it seems you’re not allowed to do this. Would it be better if I learn everything first and then start reading salah?

Salaam alykum,

I am not sure why many people have said that this is Haram. I have not seen any proof of this, and the only objection I have heard is that prayer is for yourself, not a time for reading, and thus, many scholars have urged people to not depend on pieces of paper in order to pray, which is a position that I understand, but again, those scholars do not say that it is Haram to use a piece of paper out of necessity.

Take your time, and use a piece of paper to memorize the aspects of prayer that you need, because, while Muslims who are born into Islam have the benefit of having their parents teach them how to pray and how to memorize Surahs, con/reverts do not have this luxury, and so please do not hesitate to use a piece of paper as needed, insha Allah.

Insha Allah, I hope this reaches you and your families in the best of health and Iman.
