Must We Choose Between Dunia and Akhira?

Salaam alykum,

I have said this many times before, and as much as I fear sounding like a broken record, I’ll say it again, the path of Islam is of moderation. Moderation, we continually associate with modesty, but, moderation is a far larger concept in Islam, one that denotes not just modesty, but, more importantly: balance.

I do not like those who say “forget the Dunya,” not because the concept itself is bad, rather, it is because what has occurred is that people have made “forget the Dunya” to mean “forget about your manners with other people and pray all day.”

So, is it Dunya or Akhira? I look at it this way:

How do you get to the Akhira? Through this Dunya. Take care of what happens in the Dunya with an eye on your Akhira, because The Qur’an underlines that it is both our faith and our actions that determines our destiny in the Akhira.
